Kesha Speaks Out in Support of NewJeans After Court Loss

Kesha has spoken out in support of NewJeans after the K-pop group lost their lawsuit against their record label.

Earlier this week, a South Korean court ruled against the five-member group’s attempt to terminate their contract with ADOR following the departure of their mentor.

Although Kesha has no direct connection to the group, she expressed her sympathy on X, writing, “My heart is with you NewJeans,” followed by a heart emoji.

The Tik Tok singer likely relates to their situation, having faced her own long legal battle against her record label.

For nearly ten years, Kesha was involved in court disputes with her longtime producer Dr. Luke. In 2014, she accused him of sexual assault and emotional abuse, among other claims, which he denied, countersuing her for defamation.

Kesha tried to end her contract with Dr. Luke’s label, Kemosabe Records, but the court denied her request.

Both sides eventually reached a settlement in June 2023 before the case could go to trial. That December, Kesha officially parted ways with Kemosabe Records, seven months after releasing her final album under the label, Gag Order.

As for NewJeans, members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein had sought to void their contract with ADOR after the company’s CEO, Min Hee-jin, was dismissed and later left the label.

This week, the judge ruled that the CEO’s dismissal was not enough to justify ending their seven-year agreement. The group is required to honor their contract with ADOR until 2029.

Following the decision, NewJeans’ legal team said in a statement, “The members respect the court’s judgment, but it is impossible to return to this company and continue normal activities in the current situation where trust between the group and ADOR has been completely broken.”
