Trailer for Die My Love shows Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson losing touch with reality

At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, director Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love quickly became one of the most discussed and debated entries. Now, audiences outside the festival circuit are getting their first look with a new trailer ahead of its theatrical release on Nov. 7.

The film takes inspiration from Argentine writer Ariana Harwicz’s 2012 novel of the same name and is produced by Martin Scorsese. In the trailer, Jennifer Lawrence — who also serves as one of the producers — plays a young mother descending into psychosis while she and her husband, played by Robert Pattinson, struggle to build a life together in rural Montana.

The preview unfolds as a fast-paced montage, set to Shirley Ellis’ upbeat old-school rock and roll hit “The Clapping Song.” It shows the couple running through fields of wildflowers, dancing, and leaping, but also screaming at each other, wielding knives, and at one point, Lawrence enthusiastically licking a window. The cast also includes LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek.

“It was one of the more divisive films to play at Cannes this year, to say the least, but everything you’ve heard about Lawrence’s go-for-broke performance is indeed true,” Rolling Stone senior editor and critic David Fear wrote about Die My Love as one of the most anticipated releases of the fall. “Unhinged doesn’t begin to cover it.”
